Oxyfluorfen 24% EC: Advanced Weed Control for Onion Crops
Oxyfluorfen 24% EC is a highly effective, selective herbicide distributed in Pakistan by the Evyol Group. Formulated as an Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC), it serves as a critical tool for onion and garlic farmers to control annual broadleaf weeds and certain grassy weeds, performing both as a pre-emergence soil barrier and an early post-emergence contact herbicide.
Biochemical Mode of Action
Classified under WSSA Group 14 (HRAC Group E), Oxyfluorfen inhibits the protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) enzyme. This disruption leads to cell membrane destruction and rapid necrosis of weed tissue upon exposure to sunlight. When applied to the soil, it forms a chemical barrier on the surface; emerging weed seedlings contact the barrier and die. As a post-emergence spray, it acts by contact, requiring light for toxic action.
Onion Application Protocol
In Pakistan, weed management is a major bottleneck in onion cultivation. Oxyfluorfen must be applied after onions reach the full 1-leaf stage (when the second leaf is showing). Spraying too early can injure the young crop severely. Proper soil moisture (watar) is essential during application to activate the chemical barrier.
Safety and Drift Management
Use a flat-fan nozzle and maintain low pressure. Do not mix with other EC-formulated pesticides or oil-based adjuvants unless explicitly recommended, as this can increase crop injury risk.
